It’s never too late to start learning!
At the age of 97 the amazing Dick Van Dyke has decided to take up the Ukulele, proving the old age “It’s never too late”. And it really isn’t! The Uke, with it’s four strings and being compact, is an ideal instrument to take up at any time of life. And is ideal for travelling as the soprano or concert versions fit nicely in suitcases!
A big plus for taking up the uke is that compared to some other instruments, it’s very easy to get started on.
Typically, at the end of a beginner session I will have people playing two strumming patterns, three chords and singing along to a couple of songs! Many people are happy to keep their playing simple, they’ll learn a few more chords and be happy strumming away with a group of friends or even joining a local Ukulele group, of which around the UK there are about 170!
The social aspect that the Uke can bring, is so very important to many people as it provides companionship, friendship and gives people a sense of belonging and personal skill development.
As I said, some people like to keep it simple, but the uke can also be played as a virtuoso instrument and you can make your development as difficult as you like. Who knows, you could be the next Jake Shimabukuro or Taimane Gardner.
I can’t think of a much better place to start learning the instrument than on one of the Harmony Voyages retreats or Costa Festivals. So why not join my Ukulele sessions in the sun in La Gomera, Ibiza or Portugal? I’ll even have a few spare ukes with me for you to have a try, who knows where it will take you!
So, a big well done to Mr Van Dyke! A great inspiration to all.
